Reducing Substance Abuse related HIV Vulnerability

We introduced the project I-49 of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes in Patna, along with two other NGOs for ‘Reducing Substance Abuse related HIV Vulnerability in Female Drug Users and Female Partners of Male Drug Users’.

This project started on 5th November 2005 and our key persons, opinion leaders and other social workers helped us in implementing this program.

A series of training has been conducted on HIV/AIDS and Dr. Ashok Kumar Sinha, the then Project Director of our ‘Savera’ Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts, took the lead, who himself is a Master Trainer in the field of ‘Prevention of Drug Abuse & HIV/ AIDS’.

Under this aforesaid project these specific points have been taken carefully:

  • The interpersonal communication skills and awareness could be transformed into the vulnerable target groups (Female Drug Users & Female Partners of Male Drug Users) and those addressing vulnerability regarding drug related HIV/AIDS. This program could bring about a paradigm of change in drug demand reduction/ HIV/ AIDS.
  • Formation of Self-Help Groups of the affected, infected and afflicted women from Drug Abuse & Drug Abuse related HIV/AIDS to empower the affected, afflicted & infected women in the community for the Prevention of Drugs and HIV/ AIDS by training, awareness, orientation etc.
  • To create awareness generation/ training to specially the female members about the vulnerability of the Drug Abuse & HIV/ AIDS.
  • To organize the awareness/ orientation Programme about prevention of Drug   Abuse/ HIV amongst the community people.

Female members of family are very much neglected in the community, because of this the male drug user of the family harass them physically, mentally and economically.

Amongst most of females coming from the lower class & some of them from lower middle class, working as maids or in small business / industrial establishments, their spouses take their salary forcefully from them for maintaining their addiction and sex desires etc. So, the area is the most vulnerable.

We are still extending our best possible dedicated services to the suffering humanity specially our women folks in order to bring a pragmatic change in the society.
